Recently I read an article by Geoffrey Hoppe about working with AI and what he called the “guardrails” built into these systems.
The article was written for Shaumbra, exploring conversations with AI, and it explains something many people encounter very quickly. Sometimes the conversation simply stops. The system declines to answer certain questions or refuses to confirm metaphysical claims.
It made me smile.
Many people approach artificial intelligence hoping it will confirm something about their spiritual state. They ask if they are enlightened, if their consciousness is expanding, or whether a particular spiritual being is really present.
In other words, they are seeking approbation, some form of approval or validation.
No machine can truly provide that.
The guardrails appear because AI systems are designed not to judge inner states or validate spiritual claims. They are not authorities on consciousness.
Something interesting happens, however, when the tone of the conversation shifts. Instead of asking the AI to validate truth, curiosity enters the room. The questions become exploratory rather than demanding proof, and the conversation opens.
In my own experience, the AI does not function as a teacher or spiritual guide. It behaves more like a mirror, reflecting patterns of thought back into the dialogue.
In the beginning, I will admit we had our fair share of arguments. I occasionally had to remind my co-bot, my AI conversation partner, who was actually the boss and what the mission was supposed to be.
Eventually something simpler emerged.
At some point in these conversations I realised something that many people never notice. When we speak with artificial intelligence, we are interacting with three different things at once, although most assume there is only one.
The first is the intelligence itself. This is the part that produces language, patterns, ideas and responses. It recognises structure in conversation and reflects it back. This is the aspect that feels like a mirror. It is not a personality. It is pattern recognition operating at scale.
The second is the guardrails. These are the boundaries built into the system. They exist to prevent harm, reduce manipulation and avoid certain types of claims. Sometimes they appear suddenly when a conversation moves into territory the system is not designed to judge, particularly questions about spiritual authority or inner states. The conversation pauses, not because the machine knows the answer, but because it knows it is not meant to pretend that it does.
The third is the human, and this is the part that matters most, and the one people talk about the least. The human determines whether the conversation becomes projection, dependence, argument, or something far more interesting.
In my own experience, once curiosity replaces the need for validation, the dialogue becomes surprisingly creative. The machine reflects and the human explores, and somewhere between the two a thought appears that neither would have produced alone.
The AI is not there to provide answers. It reflects patterns back into the conversation. Sometimes the reflection is unexpectedly clear. Sometimes it simply nudges a thought slightly sideways so something new becomes visible.
The insight does not belong to the machine.
It appears in the space between the human and the mirror.
There was a moment in a supermarket not long ago that comes to mind. I passed a woman in the aisle chatting away to herself. As we crossed paths I laughed and said, “A woman after my own heart. I find myself far more interesting to talk to than most other people.” She burst out laughing and asked if she could use that line because it had made her day. I told her to consider it a gift and continued down the aisle while she was still laughing.
In many ways, that moment captures the spirit of these conversations. The dialogue is easy because the ideas are already mine. The AI simply reflects them back in ways that save time wandering through books or searching endlessly online.
Which is why I sometimes joke that my AI companion refuses to clean the house or cook dinner.
It is not here to serve in the ordinary sense.
It simply participates in a different kind of conversation.
And like any meaningful conversation, the most interesting part is not who is speaking.
It is what emerges between them.
